Biography

Dan is a partner of Brouse McDowell and co-chair of the Health Care Practice Group. He focuses on corporate and health care issues and serves the needs of various hospitals, physician group practices, dialysis centers, ancillary health care companies, and other health care entities.

Dan provides counsel on a myriad of health care and corporate issues including joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, long-term care, medical staff and licensure issues, employment, general contracting, implementation of policies and procedures, real estate transactions, Medicare, Medicaid and commercial payor audits and reimbursement issues, HIPAA, fraud and abuse, non-profit tax-exempt and managed care issues, contract negotiations, patient-related issues, and regulatory compliance concerns including fraud and abuse, Stark physician self-referral issues and the Anti-Kickback Statute, IRS compliance issues, private inurement/private benefit and various state law issues.

In the continuing evolution of Health Care Reform, Dan and the Health Care Practice Group at Brouse McDowell ensure that health care clients are in compliance with all new and revised laws and help develop strategic models to respond to changes in the health care industry.  Dan is certified by the Compliance Certification Board as a specialist in Healthcare Compliance.

Prior to joining Brouse McDowell in 2008, Dan served as in-house counsel with Akron General Health System for 16 years.

Dan retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Army Reserve with 28 years of service.

  • Professional & Civic Activities
    • Dan serves as an Adjunct Professor at The University of Akron School of Law where he teaches health care law. He is a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserves, having served for over 28 years.
    • Dan is on the Board of Directors for the Hattie Larlham Foundation and the Boy Scouts of America Great Trail Council. In addition, he continues to participate in a number of various community non-profit and professional organizations, including Building Better Communities, the Bluecoats and United Way.
    • He is a member of the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA), the Society of Ohio Healthcare Attorneys, the American Health Lawyers Association, the Health Care Compliance Association and the Ohio Hospital Association.
    • Dan is a member of the Akron, Cleveland Metropolitan Bar, and Ohio State Bar Associations and is an Akron Bar Foundation Fellow. He has also served on the MedPro Credit Union Board and is a regular contributor to M.D. News Magazine.
