The Nature Center at Shaker Lakes was founded in 1966 as part of a grassroots movement to prevent the construction of a freeway through the Shaker Parklands and Cleveland’s east side suburbs. Today, the Nature Center stands as an urban oasis, outdoor classroom and destination that is free and open to the public year-round. Each year, more than 40,000 walkers, runners, birders, and other nature lovers visit the Center, and 14,000 children participate in nearly 30,000 hours of curriculum-related school programming. The Nature Center is a 501(c)(3) organization and receives no tax dollars to support its operations, educational programming, and trail and habitat maintenance.
