Brouse McDowell Names Two New Partners

Brouse McDowell, a business law firm based in northeast Ohio, is pleased to announce that as of January 1, 2021, Laura F. Fryan and Nicholas J. Kopcho were elected as partners of the firm.

Fryan is a member of the firm’s Health Care Practice Group. She has experience working with providers of all sizes and types, as well as businesses with products or services in the health care industry. She advises clients on a variety of important issues including HIPAA, Stark and Anti-Kickback compliance, vendor agreements and employment contracts, overpayments and government investigations, reimbursement from commercial and government payors, facility bylaws and peer review plans, and state and federal licensing. She also facilitates transactions, including joint ventures, leasing of physician practices, and the buying and selling of hospitals, physician groups, and other health care related entities. She is an author of the blog series Compliance Checkup and enjoys sharing knowledge through speaking, writing, and her involvement with American Health Lawyers. She received the “30 for the Future” award from the Greater Akron Chamber in 2019 and has been recognized as a Rising Star for Health Care by Super Lawyers®, a service of Thomson Reuters legal division (2018-2019). She earned her JD from The University of Akron School of Law, summa cum laude, where she received the CALI Excellence Awards for the highest "A" in Civil Procedure II, Torts II, and Seminar in Pretrial Advocacy. She also holds an MBA from The University of Akron and a BA in Political Science from Grove City College.

Kopcho is a member of the firm’s Litigation Practice Group. He is an experienced trial and appellate lawyer who represents individuals, small businesses, and Fortune 500 companies in civil and commercial litigation. His experience includes representing policyholders in insurance coverage disputes, prosecuting and defending against breach of contract claims under both common law and the UCC, responding to complaints and investigative inquiries from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), and defending companies of all sizes against claims brought under the Ohio Consumer Sales Practice Act (OSCPA), Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), and Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). In addition to civil and commercial litigation, he has significant experience representing health care providers, including large hospital systems, on all types of contracting and reimbursement issues, including dealing with Medicaid Managed Care Organizations and self-funded plans governed by ERISA, helping providers deal with contracted and non-contracted referenced-based pricing plans, defending hospitals against alleged violations of HIPAA, as well as counseling providers on compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, Anti-Kickback, Stark, and other regulations. Nick was listed in the inaugural edition of The Best Lawyers in America© Ones to Watch for Insurance Law (2021) and was recognized as a Rising Star for Business Litigation by Super Lawyers®, a service of Thomson Reuters legal division (2017-2021). He earned his JD from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, where he was Editor of Journal of Law and Health. He received his BS in Biochemical Pharmacology and Marketing from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
