The highly publicized 2013 security breach of Target’s payment and security system highlighted the many avenues that can lead to organizational breach. The avenue that led to Target’s breach may be a surprise. In this article, James Dixon shows how an employee of an HVAC company that Target hired fell victim to a phishing attack which led to the breach of the Target’s payment and security systems. He notes that cybersecurity threats such as this are common in the construction industry, and he provides tips for contractors to ensure they have proper insurance coverage to mitigate these risks.
