Brouse McDowell Announces Winner of Karl S. Hay Community Service Award

(June 26, 2008 – Akron/Cleveland/Elyria) – Brouse McDowell, a regional business law firm headquartered in Akron, is proud to announce that the 2008 Karl S. Hay Community Service Award honoree is Patricia A. Gajda, Chair of Brouse McDowell’s Business, Corporate and Securities practice group.

The Karl S. Hay Community Service Award program began in 2002 and recognizes those Brouse McDowell employees who have made exceptional contributions of time, talents, energy and enthusiasm in service to others. Each recipient’s designated non-profit organization receives a monetary donation from Brouse McDowell. Organizations that have received past award donations include Akron Community Foundation, Domestic Violence Center, Hattie Larlham Foundation, Akron Road Runner Marathon and Youth Challenge.

Having been involved in charitable organizations for over 25 years, Gajda believes that it is essential to give back to people and communities, and that strong belief in giving back forms the cornerstone of her involvement in charities and causes. “The greatest reward for giving back is the feeling that you’ve shared a part of yourself to help others,” said Gajda.

Gajda designated Art Therapy Studio, Northeastern Ohio’s premier provider of customized art therapy services for special needs populations, to receive the Karl S. Hay Award donation. Art Therapy Studio serves over 3,000 people each year, specializing in programs and services (the oldest expressive art program of its kind in the country) for children and adults who are physically disabled, medically and emotionally ill; and individuals seeking a wholeness/wellness approach to healing with a special emphasis on older adults.

The Karl S. Hay Community Service Award is named for a former Brouse McDowell partner whose service to Akron and Summit County is legendary. Hay joined the firm in 1955 and was inspired by Akronites who were legendary for their roles in the community: Ben Maidenberg, former Beacon Journal Publisher; Harry P. Schrank, a Seiberling Rubber Company executive; Blake McDowell, Sr.; and William Zekan, a former chief executive of A. Schulman Company. Hay summed up the meaning of this award best when he said, “Those four people taught me that this is a great community – it’s our home,” said Karl. “If you want it any better, you do something about it and you get involved.”
