Youngstown Partner Matthew Vansuch Wins Karl S. Hay Community Service Award

September 5, 2023

Brouse McDowell is proud to award Youngstown Partner Matt Vansuch with the 2023 Karl S. Hay Community Service Award. Matt has been an active member of a number of boards and committees and serving the community, positively impacting the Mahoning Valley community.

For five years, Matt served as a Board Member and Vice Chair of the Board for the Northeast Ohio Adoption Services — a private, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) agency founded in 1978 to serve children and families with programs built on their mission to promote lifelong permanency for current and former foster youth by recruiting, preparing, and supporting families and positive connections.

He currently is a member of the Trumbull County United Way Planning Committee, and for the last seven years has provided input, advisory guidance, and recommendations to the Board of Directors about the United Way’s programs, strategic planning, and funding. With his guidance and that of the Planning Committee, Trumbull County United Way has successfully incorporated an impact funding model, which involves funding programs that address a particular issue of importance to that chapter, such as literacy and third grade reading standards and testing.

Matt is also very active in service to the legal profession. He is currently a member of the Ohio State Bar Association’s Board of Governors, the volunteer body that manages the Ohio Bar’s business affairs, sets policy, and reviews pending legislation on behalf of the members of the OSBA. He has served on the OSBA Dean’s and Practitioners Advisory Council, and he serves as the Vice Chair of the Government Affairs committee. Previously, he served the Ohio State Bar Association as the District 18 representative to the Council of Delegates.

He is an active member of the Trumbull County and Mahoning County bar associations.

At the TCBA, he is a former Chair of the Young Lawyers Committee, and a current member of the Court Relations/Local Rules Committee, Bar Application Committee, and Fee Dispute Committee.

Additionally, Matt is the Voice of the Howland High School and Youngstown State University marching bands, introducing and announcing the band performances during football season. He also serves as a Parish Council member at St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church.

To this day, Brouse strives to honor longtime Brouse McDowell Partner Karl Hay’s legacy and to emulate his commitment to the community through the Karl S. Hay Community Service Award. This award was created by the firm in 2002 and recognizes a Brouse attorney, paralegal or staff member who exemplifies the unwavering commitment to our community by making a monetary donation to the recipient’s charity of choice.

Organizations that have received past award donations include Akron Community Foundation, Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Domestic Violence Center, Hattie Larlham Foundation, Akron Road Runner Marathon, and Youth Challenge.
